Key points

  • The Power Division lists 33,092 MW including captive and renewable energy.
  • It lists maximum generation of 17,201 MW on 20 May 2026.
  • Capacity, maximum output, ordinary availability and delivered energy are different measures.
Review and disclosure: Reviewed against the Power Division snapshot updated 14 July 2026

The source scope comes first

The Power Division’s “power sector at a glance” page uses a broad system capacity total. A BPDB table limited to a subset of plants can legitimately produce another number. The correct editorial response is to show the scope, not choose the larger figure.

Capacity is not continuous output

Maximum generation is a dated record, while available generation changes with fuel, outages, maintenance, hydrology, weather, transmission and demand.

Network indicators provide context

The same official snapshot lists 18,816 circuit-kilometres of transmission lines and 91,512 MVA of grid-substation capacity. These measures help place generation assets within the wider delivery system.

Decision-grade reporting

VOLTLENS will preserve source dates, units, definitions and revisions, and will avoid comparing figures whose coverage has not been reconciled.
